Well, this is one of those things that you had to see coming. Who are we kidding? Stevie Wonder could have seen this coming. The Philadelphia Eagles have made the decision to extend their second-round selection from the 2018 NFL Draft. The Thanksgiving holiday should be rather enjoyable for Dallas Goedert and his family.

According to Eagles Insider Dave Spadaro and the team’s official team site, Philadelphia has inked Goedert to a four-year contract extension that keeps him in the City of Brotherly Love from now until the end of the 2025 season.

Keeping Dallas Goedert around is obviously the right move.

Heading into the 2021 regular season, the Eagles had a dilemma albeit one that we could all, pretty much, guess how it would end. Dallas Goedert by virtue of his rookie deal being in its final year and Zach Ertz who was also set to become a free agent after the 2021-2022 season were two great players seeking new deals. It was obvious that the Eagles weren’t going to pay huge price tags to keep both of them around.

In all honesty, Ertz, who is still a capable tight end in the National Football League, isn’t what he used to be physically, so he seemed like the odd man out. Both guys didn’t want to split on-field time despite doing so for the first six weeks of the season, so when the three-time Pro Bowl nod Ertz was dealt to the Arizona Cardinals for a fifth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft and cornerback Tay Gowan, no one was shocked.

That meant Philly had to extend Goedert though, and now, they have. At 25 years of age (he turns 26 in January) it’s clear that he has the tools to be one of the best tight ends in the game for years to come.

Ertz is the best tight end in Eagles history, but Goedert is a better blocker. He’s also a better runner once he has the ball in his hands. Philly, in essence, gave up greatness for the potential of something else becoming great. Goedert is on his way.

So far, in 51 in-game appearances with 34 starts, he’s hauled 166 receptions for 1,894 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s added another nine catches. 93 yards and a touchdown in three postseason games. He hasn’t earned his first Pro Bowl yet, but that day will come. You just wait and see.

Philadelphia does themselves a solid with this one though, locking up one of their best players on offense for four more years. Look for him to continue to grow with Jalen Hurts. This could be a nice connection for years to come.
