3 Reasons Eagles signing T.J. Edwards to one-year extension was wise
If you’ve been living under a rock for the last day or so, you may have missed some pretty big news. Here’s an update if that’s the case. The Philadelphia Eagles took care of business versus the New Orleans Saints and are now smack dab in the middle of something we haven’t seen in a while, a winning streak. They also announced via the team’s official website just one day later, that they’re inking T.J. Edwards to a one-year extension.
The Birds have also put pen to paper with many of the other members of their young core over the earlier parts of the season as well as the past week. Jordan Mailata got his money at the beginning of the season on the eve of the Eagles’ first game of the 2021-2022 campaign. Josh Sweat, Dallas Goedert, and Avonte Maddox have been extended as well.
Take a look at some of the highlights as we’ve learned that Edwards will remain in the nest until the close of the 2022 season.
Here are three of about 20 reasons why extending T.J. Edwards was a wise move.
1. The Eagles business model seems to be changing (thank goodness).
If you’re sick of all of the playing time that Derek Barnett and Jalen Reagor seem to receive despite the fact that they’re doing nothing to prove that they deserve it, fear not. You aren’t alone.
That’s the business model in Philadelphia however. Sometimes, being right is more important than being competitive on the football field. Moves like this however could prove that the business model is changing.
It took Edwards a while to get on the field this season, and it wasn’t because he couldn’t play. It was because he wasn’t drafted, and the Eagles’ leadership wants the guys that they’ve invested more into out on the field on game days.
This signing means more than it appears to demonstrate on the surface. The Birds could finally be learning from past errors. Have you noticed that Derek Barnett still hasn’t received his extension yet?
2. Edwards provides value on defense AND special teams.
T.J. Edwards has been a monster on special teams and since he got the call to start at the linebacker position. He isn’t always mentioned as one of the heroes of Week 5’s win versus the Carolina Panthers, but it was his block on a special teams punt late in the fourth quarter that put the Eagles in a position to win.
That remains one of the biggest moments of the campaign so far, and his interception versus the Saints in Week 11 helped spark his teammates yet again.
3. This won’t break the bank and still gives Philly an opportunity to evaluate his development.
It always comes down to money, and Edwards’ deal is neither lengthy nor expensive. Kudos to the Eagles for locking up one of their better young players without breaking the bank. Now, it’s up to T.J. to ball out and get that big deal at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
