Uh oh! The news isn’t good. One of the feel-good stories of the 2021 Philadelphia Eagles season so far has been the development of Davion Taylor. Unfortunately, it appears that Philly will be without their young linebacker for quite some time.

During his Monday afternoon press conference following the Eagles’ Week 11 victory over the New Orleans Saints, head coach Nick Sirianni announced Taylor may need to head to the team’s IR (injured reserve) as he recovers from what Coach described as a knee sprain.

An impressive progression by the young Eagles star has been paused.

Davion Taylor was a third-round draft choice during the 2020 NFL Draft. The former Pac-12 standout didn’t play football in high school but began making a name for himself on the gridiron when his mother gave him permission to begin doing so before the 2018 NCAA football season.

A transfer from Coahoma Community College in Mississippi to Boulder, Colorado to join the Buffaloes program came next. That began a march towards the NFL after he popped up on a few radars including that of the Eagles.

In 24 games at the collegiate level, Taylor racked up 129 total tackles, including 100 of the solo variety and 18 that resulted in a loss of yardage. He also notched two sacks, six pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown.

His speed has long been considered his best asset, and while that didn’t catapult him to NFL stardom immediately (he played 32 defensive snaps as a rookie and another 178 on special teams), he has earned the trust of his coaches over the course of the current season.

From Week 5 to Week 10, he was on the field for 225 defensive snaps, but he left Week 11’s game after only playing seven snaps as he re-aggravated a knee issue he’s been dealing with recently.

If Coach Sirianni is correct and he heads to the team’s IR, this would be a significant loss as Taylor has earned a sizable role in Jonathan Gannon’s defensive scheme. Still, with the presence of T.J. Edwards, who got some good news recently as he was extended on Monday, and Alex Singleton, the Philadelphia Eagles should be in good hands during the stretch run of the regular season.
