Philadelphia Eagles must get Greg Ward more involved in this offense

Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to take this opportunity to reintroduce you all to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Greg Ward. Remember him? If you’re a little hazy, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

Greg Ward is the wide receiver comparative to what Jordan Howard and Boston Scott somehow became in this Eagles offense. He’s talented yet, for whatever reason, lacking the support of Philadelphia’s front office and, as a result, he’s stuck in the roster’s version of limbo as someone the coaching staff just isn’t going to play.

G-Ward, as Brandon Graham calls him, came to the Birds as an undrafted rookie free agent (and former quarterback) in 2017. He’s been cut, released, and re-signed so many times now that we honestly can’t tell you how many times it’s happened without cheating and using Google. He’s also had to go to the Alliance of American Football and play for something called the San Antonio Commanders.

Here’s something that you won’t need to research. He’s still on the Eagles’ active roster, and he’s actually been on the field for 152 snaps, roughly 21 percent of the team’s total, but if you failed to notice, don’t beat yourself up too bad. He’s only been targeted three times through 11 games.

That is inexcusable when he might be the third-best receiver on this team. Yep, we’re putting him right behind DeVonta Smith and Quez Watkins. No one will ever mistake Greg Ward for Ja’Marr Chase, but he’s clearly better than JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Jalen Reagor. We dare you to disagree.

We mentioned Ward’s three targets through 11 games. He caught two of them. Both were touchdowns. He has as many of those as Dallas Goedert has this season. He’s also tied with Jalen Reagor in that category.

Greg Ward isn’t the prototypical wide receiver, but he’s reliable, something we can’t say about JJAW or Reagor, and he’s exactly what this team needs to give the Birds some extra punch in the passing game. He’s the help that DeVonta Smith and Jalen Hurts have been looking for.

He’s never had a bad camp. Philly just always seemed to have six or seven guys that were better, and as a result, Ward normally found his way to the Eagles scout team. Still, even with that being said, he’s appeared in 34 games with 13 starts, and he’s hauled in 83 passes for 703 yards, and he’s found his way into the end zone nine times.

If you’re keeping score, that’s 140 yards short of Arcega-Whiteside and Reagor’s combined career receiving totals. His nine TDs are more than the combined career totals of Smith, Reagor, JJAW, Shelton Gibson, and Mack Hollins during his time in an Eagles jersey.

Put this guy on the field! Get him more involved in this offense. Perhaps someone needs to remind this team that this passing game isn’t what some would deem ‘explosive’. It’s not like they can afford to ignore anyone that can help this team move the chains, and whenever he’s gotten a chance to do so, Greg Ward has definitely shown that he knows how to do that.
