DeVonta Smith has an interesting pre-game ritual before Eagles home games
There’s nothing like playing football in the City of Brotherly Love as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Whether you’re a proven veteran or a wet-behind-the-ears rookie, the spotlight burns brightly. You’re constantly under the microscope. Just ask DeVonta Smith (though his take on this might be more intense).
For the most recent Heisman Trophy winner, the bulb in that aforementioned spotlight carries an even higher wattage. Before he even stepped on an NFL field, we talked about his weight. Then, we talked about his role in the Eagles’ offense, the domino effect that we expected him to have on the other wide receivers on the roster, and, yes, even the drops.
Smith appears to be on his way though. A 1,000-yard receiving campaign as a rookie appears to be inevitable, and from where we’re sitting, if he continues a pre-game ritual that he employs prior to Eagles home games, we may not have to worry about that slim frame for much longer.
DeVonta Smith eats at McDonald’s before every home game.
In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, one that’s a must-read, Christopher Cason, the writer of this one, spoke DeVonta Smith about some of the advice he’s been given about how to navigate year one, his recent partnership with Therabody, one of the world’s leaders in health and recovery, and as you might expect, all of those questions about his physical frame.
So, what’s life like for an NFL rookie headed to work for home games? Believe it or not, it actually isn’t much different than so many others as they prepare for a nine-to-five grind. DeVonta goes to McDonald’s!
Here’s a quote from Cason’s piece:
"If it’s a home game, for breakfast, I’m going to McDonald’s. I’m not even going to lie to you. I have to get a McGriddle, two hash browns and an orange juice. If it’s a home game, I have to have it. If it’s a road game, I’ll just eat in the hotel. It’ll be some scrambled eggs, fruit, orange juice and that would be it. I really don’t eat a lot before the game. Right before the game, I’ll probably have some fruit and leave it at that."
Again, McDonald’s will definitely help with beefing up that slim frame! We’re teasing of course, but in all seriousness, we’ve heard this before.
If you’ll remember, former NFL great Chad Johnson was mentioned in Business Insider’s ten strangest diets in sports history. He’s often sworn that a strict McDonald’s diet has aided him, not hurt him to be one of the better receivers we’ve seen in the NFL over the past 20 years.
Who knows? Maybe there’s something to it. We’d advise against trying it, but when you think about it, either there’s something to what Johnson and Smith are saying or these guys are so elite physically that they can afford to make some dietary decisions that the rest of us can’t. For now, we’ll go with the latter theory as the most accurate.
