Five Eagles free agents who won’t be back in 2022
Eagles cornerback Steven Nelson
It never seems to end. Regardless of who they draft or sign, the Eagles always seem to have a huge hole at one of their outside cornerback positions. Heck, sometimes they need two of them.
This year, we came into 2021’s NFL regular season feeling pretty good about what we could expect from Darius Slay, and even though the Birds invested draft capital into Zech McPhearson, it still felt like they needed another body on the other side of the formation to fill in as a starter.
Enter Steven Nelson. The Eagles inked him to a one-year deal on July 25th. Though he’s been very serviceable at times, he hasn’t convinced Philadelphia that they should offer him an extension as evidenced by the fact that he doesn’t have one.
Now that Avonte Maddox has been signed to an extension of his own and the Eagles have brought in more young talent at the cornerback position (Mac McCain, Josiah Scott, and Tay Gowan for instance), it seems even more unlikely that Nelson will be much more than a very talented one-and-done player in an Eagles jersey.
