Jonathan Gannon named 2022 head coaching candidate by NFL Insider
He frustrates us sometimes. Then, there are times in which it feels as though, if the Philadelphia Eagles are going to have a shot at winning, it’s going to be the defense that keeps them in the game (and then, that’s exactly what they do). Philly’s defense looks like they’re never going to allow the other team to score at times. At other times, they look like swiss cheese, but here’s where the rubber meets the road.
With 16 games of the 2021-2022 NFL schedule in the books, Jonathan Gannon‘s approval rating in the City of Brotherly Love has been up and down, to say the least. Opposing quarterbacks have, at times, put drives together with ease, and it hasn’t mattered whether they were grizzled veterans or unpolished youths.
The Birds, despite winning eight of their first 15 games (and three straight) haven’t beaten one of the game’s premier signal-callers all season, but we’ve also seen Javon Hargrave, Darius Slay, and T.J. Edwards have great seasons in his system. That’s only added to the theory that, come the 2022 offseason, Jonathan Gannon might emerge as one of the NFL’s hot head-coaching candidates.
Peter Schrager adds some intrigue to the Jonathan Gannon rumors.
On the Monday following the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 15 win over the New York Giants, NFL Network’s Good Morning Football team, during their first hour, tossed around the names of a few potential candidates that could get some burn in 2022.
Peter Schrager tossed Gannon’s name in the hat as someone to watch. Here’s his list:
Keep a few things in mind. One, it wasn’t long ago that Gannon was expected to follow Arthur Smith wherever he went but elected to join Nick Sirianni’s staff in Philadelphia. Second, he’s been climbing the ranks of young head-coaching candidates for a while.
Since 2012, he’s served as the Tennessee Titans defensive quality control coach (2012-2013) as well as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings (2014–2017) and Indianapolis Colts (2018–2020). This one isn’t a four-alarm blaze yet, but it is something to make note of. Expect this to pick up some steam once teams begin their head-coaching search and the Eagles’ season is officially over.
