JJ Arcega-Whiteside, wide receiver

We’ve heard a lot about the different types of wide receivers football teams employ for about as long as we’ve been watching the game.

There are the track stars, guys we’d just ask to run vertical routes on every play if we could. There are the possession guys, those bigger targets that the quarterback looks for on third down or in the red zone. There are the slot guys, those smaller and, more often than not, shifter guys that can juke defenders and find open spaces in the defense.

Once you get the ball in those guys’ hands, you’re hoping that you can just kick your feet up and just watch them create. Perhaps, they’ll turn a five-yard pass into a 20-yard completion.

Then, there’s JJ Arcega-Whiteside. It’s been over three years since the Philadelphia Eagles ignored D.K. Metcalf to take him (he was a Jeffrey Lurie pick), and here we are still asking ourselves the same question. What does this guy do well?

Sheesh! This team really does struggle to find wide receivers, huh?

JJAW is one of those guys that makes you ask why he’s on the field every time you see him out there. He’s neither slot receiver, nor deep-threat, nor possession guy. We were told during his rookie season that he was the second coming of Alshon Jeffery. That was a lie.

JJAW isn’t Alshon Jeffery. Heck, Jeffrey Lurie might be more productive on the field. Three NFL seasons have produced 16 receptions, 290 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. That includes two receptions for 36 yards in 2021. Disappointment? We say yes!
