Re-signing two Eagles first-rounders is easier than re-signing three of them.

When 2024 arrives, there’s a possibility that the Birds will have to hand out a ton of cash. Jalen Hurts, Davion Taylor, Darius Slay, and Jack Driscoll will all be at the end of their rookie deals and looking for more money.

If nothing changed between now and then, Philadelphia will have to make decisions on more than ten potential free agents come that offseason. There’s also no guarantee that the Eagles won’t exercise a fifth-year option on Jalen Reagor’s rookie deal. Let’s hope they don’t, but there’s no way to tell. They did exercise an option on Derek Barnett remember?

If history was to repeat itself, that would mean Reagor’s name would be in the mix in 2024 as well.

In 2025, it will be time to talk about whether or not the franchise needs to extend Josh Sweat, Avonte Maddox, Jake Elliott, Landon Dickerson, Milton Williams, Kenneth Gainwell, and Tarron Jackson among others. In other words, the Birds’ leadership structure will need to shell out some more cash.

The 2022 draft class will reach the end of their rookie deals in 2026. That’s if they don’t have fifth-year options or if those options aren’t exercised. Let’s just say the Birds select three guys in 2022, and they all become centerpieces of this organization, which is exactly what you hope for when you invest a first-round selection into someone.

All three of Philadelphia’s potential first-rounders will want max deals when they’re available. An offseason in which the Eagles can ink two of those types of talents as opposed to three is one that causes less stress on the organization, especially financially.

We’re a long way from having those types of discussions, but it would be wise if this team did so. After all, we’ve seen the Eagles struggle with having to scramble to become cap compliant before. Better planning can prevent them from winding up in the same situation.
