Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon earns another interview
During a Tuesday afternoon sit-down with members of the media, as you might expect, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonthan Gannon was asked about whether or not there was any truth to the rumors that he was, indeed, a candidate for the vacant Denver Broncos head coaching job. He confirmed that he was but made it clear that the immediate priority was beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the NFL’s Wild Card Weekend.
On the eve of said game, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Minnesota Vikings are now interested in granting him an interview for their head-coaching vacancy as well.
The Broncos parted ways with their most recent head coach Vic Fangio on January 9th, one day after losing to the rival Kansas City Chiefs in their regular-season finale. The Vikings followed suit by relieving Mike Zimmer of his duties two days later on January 11th.
Here’s Pelissero’s report:
Jonathan Gannon’s buzz continues to grow.
The news here shouldn’t surprise anyone. Gannon’s name has been one of the more talked about potential head-coaching candidates since the last NFL offseason. It was once believed that he’d join Arthur Smith’s staff in Atlanta with the Falcons, but he elected, instead, to join Nick Sirianni as a member of the Eagles staff in the City of Brotherly Love.
NFL Network’s Peter Schrager added fuel to the fire by naming Gannon as one of his potential head coaches to watch on an episode of Good Morning Football. The Vikings’ job makes a ton of sense as he’s already familiar with the organization.
He served as the Vikes’ assistant defensive backs coach from 2014 to 2017 before he spent three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts as former Eagles offensive coordinator/Colts head coach Frank Reich’s defensive backs coach.
Things are just getting started with these head-coaching searches, and as mentioned, the Birds still have a game to play, but this is a developing story to watch. Jonathan Gannon’s name continues to get some major burn around NFL circles.
