Nick Sirianni makes his pitch to lure Jason Kelce back for another season
We don’t see this often in the NFL, but Jason Kelce appears to be aging in reverse. No one gets faster and stronger as they get older, but after being drafted 191st-overall during Round 6 of the 2011 NFL Draft, a man that was described as ‘undersized’ has crafted a resume that’s Hall-of-Fame worthy.
Jason Kelce isn’t just one of the most beloved Philadelphia Eagles to ever wear the jersey. He’s also one of the best players and athletes in the franchise’s history.
It seems like it’s necessary to bring this up as often as possible. He’s a five-time Pro Bowl nod (2014, 2016, 2019–2021) and a four-team First-Team All-Pro selection (2017–2019, 2021). He’s also a shoo-in for the team’s Hall of Fame. Frankly, we don’t understand why we don’t hear the discussions about his bust being carved and placed in Canton, Ohio at the Pro Football Hall of Fame more often than we do.
We have a little while before we hear that induction speech. For now, we have more pressing matters to talk about like how do we get this guy to come back for another season? Recently, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni came up with an idea.
Nick Sirianni asks Jason Kelce to return for a 12th season.
As the NFL’s offseason nears, the Eagles are already making decisions about next season. They signed 11 players to reserve/futures deals. They have decisions to make about their impending free agents, both restricted and unrestricted.
Heading into the 2022 offseason, Coach Sirianni made an appearance on 94 WIP-FM’s Angelo Cataldi And The Morning Team Show. As you might imagine, Jason Kelce’s name came up, and you can best believe that Sirianni has already exercised some unusual way to convince the legend to return for a 12th NFL season.
Here’s what he had to say on the subject:
"I sent him two kegs of beer yesterday… You know what, he’s awesome and I’ve told him how much we want him back. He’s an unbelievable leader. Everything you hear about, if you don’t know Jason Kelce personally, everything you hear about him is as advertised. He’s awesome. He’s a great leader. He’s a great player. He’s the backbone of this team. He’s so smart as a football player. Like he makes us go as a team. As long as Jason wants to play. I think in the middle of the year I said, ‘You got five more years in you?’ We laughed about it."
We hear you Coach! And, we co-sign. Jason Kelce has earned the right to play until he decides he’s done with the game. He’s still the best at his position, and it just feels like he can play a few more years at a high level.
First things first though. We have to get him to come back in 2022. Let’s hope he does. He’s the anchor of the O-line, and it’s hard to imagine what the offensive front will look like if he isn’t there to lead them.
