Philadelphia Eagles lose another executive, this time to NFC East rival
Remember when we were told by the Philadelphia Eagles‘ brass that the organization had all of these future general managers in-house? Remember how funny we all thought that was? Who would have thought that Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman would have been pinpoint accurate in their analysis and the rest of us would be wrong?
Here we are, still debating who might replace Ian Cunningham, after Philadelphia lost him to the Chicago Bears on January 29th, and not even a week later, news breaks that the rival New York Giants are hiring Brandon Brown as their new assistant general manager. He’ll be working closely with their new general manager, recently-hired Joe Schoen.
Here’s the report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter who was first with the story.
The Giants also announced that they were elevating Kevin Abrams to become their senior vice president of football operations and strategy. He was formerly their assistant general manager and, more recently, their vice president of football operations.
Here’s what could happen next as the Philadelphia Eagles look to restock the front office.
Andy Weidl serves as the Philadelphia Eagles’ vice president of player personnel, and with news of Cunningham and Brown’s departure, both of his right-hand men are gone. Cunningham focused on the collegiate arm of scouting during his time with the organization. Brown, who joined the Eagles in 2017 (he was an assistant director of pro scouting then), focused on the professional side.
Brown was promoted and became the director of professional scouting in 2019 before settling in as the co-director of player personnel in 2021. There’s been no word on who the Eagles are eyeing as replacements for Brown and Cunningham after their departures, but Joh McMullen of JAKIB Media Sports, 6ABC in Philly, Sports Illustrated, and Philly Voice offered his theory during his analysis of Brown’s hire by New York.
"As far as who will replace Brown and Cunningham in Philadelphia, if the Eagles take a similar path the next logical candidates would be Anthony Patch, the team’s senior director of college scouting, and perhaps Max Gruder, the assistant director of pro scouting. The organization remains well-stocked with veteran personnel executives to help, including former Jacksonville GM Dave Caldwell, senior football advisor Tom Donahoe and player personnel exec T.J. McCreight."
Hey, that works for us. We’ll see what happens in the meantime, but anyone the Eagles hire or elevate has some huge shoes to fill. Patch and Gruder should be up for the tasks if they’re the next men up.
