6 free agents who would love playing with Eagles QB Jalen Hurts
Melvin Gordon’s addition gives the Eagles’ rushing attack another dimension.
This one feels like a bit of deja vu. We’ve discussed the possibility of the Eagles making a run at Melvin Gordon before. Well, some of us did anyway, but that was years ago. He was a member of the L.A. Chargers then, unhappy, and still, one of the best players at his position. Oh, and here’s another nugget. Nick Sirianni was a part of the Chargers’ offensive coaching staff at the time.
Fast forward, and Gordon’s career has taken a turn. Whenever we discuss available running backs, we have to consider the amount of time that they’ve been playing, how much punishment they’ve taken, and, of course, how old they are. All of those will be question marks for interested teams as the two-time Pro Bowler enters free agency. He’ll be 29 years old when the next NFL season begins, and already, he’s showing some signs of deterioration.
Melvin Gordon has carried the ball 200 times or more in each of the past two seasons. Both of which were played with one of L.A.’s biggest rivals, the Denver Broncos. His most recent allowed the Birds to see his work first-hand thanks to their Week 10 meeting with Denver this past November.
Gordon reached the end zone in that game but was only able to rack up 45 yards on nine carries. He also coughed the ball up once. That was good for the Birds but costly for Denver. Yep, that was the fumble Darius Slay took 77 yards to the house.
You never want to see guys cough the ball up, and Melvin Gordon has done that a lot in his career. If Philly’s looking for a workhorse however he’ll be one of the more attractive options available. He’s also a lot more durable than Jordan Howard, who the Birds have a ton of respect for.
