Eagles coach’s bond with Christian Kirk could spark surprise addition
It’s gotten to the point where channeling one’s inner prognosticator is impossible to avoid doing. Philadelphia Eagles fans, radio personalities, and members of the print and television media are constantly racking their brains about what might come next.
We type up mock drafts, or we perform them in our own head, sometimes when we’re supposed to be working or doing something else. We draft Fantasy football players based on what we believe they might do. Then, we beat our chests and brag when someone has a fantastic statistical showing… you know, because we were smarter than everyone else and we saw it coming when no one else did. Then, there are mock drafts and March Madness brackets.
You see where this is going right? Again, we just can’t help ourselves. Most times, we aren’t certain of anything. It’s just really cool when we guess and we’re right. That brings us to Christian Kirk.
A connection between Christian Kirk and an Eagles assistant could spark a conversation… maybe.
We mentioned mock drafts earlier. As the remaining days of February trickle away and we move into the month of March, you’ll no doubt see quite a few of them. Before we reach the end of April and the annual selection meeting, however, the NFL Scouting Combine and the next free-agency period are on the schedule. You know what that means.
Yep, we’re throwing our prognosticator caps and making more of those educated guesses. What do we believe Howie Roseman will do with three first-round picks? What happens in free agency? Will the Eagles focus more on adding to their offensive arsenal or do they add pieces to their defense?
The truth is no one has the answer, not even the Eagles themselves, but here’s what we do know. Relationships matter.
Teams and coaches like having guys they know around. That’s why you’re always seeing the BIrds cut guys and bring them back. That’s why Greg Ward has been released and reacquired more times than we can remember. It’s the reason Nick Sirianni hired Jonathan Gannon.
It’s also, for that reason, that we’re throwing Christian Kirk’s name onto the list of impending free agents the Eagles might make a run at. For those that don’t know, Philadelphia’s wide receivers coach, Aaron Moorehead, served in the same role during his days in College Station and got to know Kirk well as he was one of the Texas A&M Aggies’ best players at the time.
During their time together (2015-2017), Kirk won the SEC Freshman of the Year Award (2015), and he took home two First-team All-SEC nods (2016, 2017) en route to becoming the Arizona Cardinals second-round draft selection in 2018.
So far, despite landing on the Pro Football Writer’s of America’s All-Rookie Team in 2018, Kirk’s career hasn’t produced the fireworks that he may have liked. In four seasons, he’s hauled in 236 receptions for 2,902 yards and 17 touchdowns.
From an Eagles fan’s perspective, most would love to see the Birds make a run at one of the more sought-after wide receivers in free agency’s pool, Davante Adams or Chris Godwin for instance. You have to consider the fact that the Green Bay Packers could franchise Adams if a deal can’t be reached. In terms of Godwin, there’s no guarantee that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would let him go, and if they do, he’ll cost a pretty penny.
Philadelphia has some decisions to make, but bargain shopping might be a route they take. That brings us back to Kirk. With a major need at the wide receiver position, this could be one of those moves that make sense in terms of both strategy and finances.
We’re a long way from having to have that though. Again, we’ll tackle the scouting combine first, but put this one in the back of your mind. The relationship is there. The need is there. The question is, however, is either side interested?
