Eagles offseason ‘best-case scenario’ includes Mike Williams mention
You all know how this works. Football’s offseason is upon us, and the rumor mills are churning. The Philadelphia Eagles and every single one of the 31 NFL franchises that didn’t hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy all have one thing on their mind… Regroup, prevent the Los Angeles Rams from repeating and put some hardware on your shelf at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
Step number one is getting a look at the next class of rookies at the coming NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Once that wraps, it’s full steam ahead towards the next free-agency frenzy.
You’re not alone. Everyone’s playing this real-life version of Fantasy football as they’re fantasizing about some of the best players signing with their team. Roster turnover is unavoidable in the NFL, and some very familiar faces will be playing in new cities later on this year.
Unless something changes in the next few weeks, L.A. Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams will test free agency’s waters. He’d look great in an Eagles uniform as the Birds could certainly use some help at wide receiver. Don’t look now, but his name is being mentioned in conjunction with the Birds often.
Mike Williams would look awesome in an Eagles jersey, wouldn’t he?
We’ve identified and/or discussed Philly’s biggest roster holes for quite some time now. They’re seemingly the same as every other offseason: edge rusher, wide receiver, cornerback, linebacker, safety.
With money to spend, there’s hope that Eagles leadership adds a few big fish from the pool of unrestricted free agents. Mike Williams is someone that every team looking for help at wide receiver is eyeing for obvious reasons, and one of ESPN’s trusted voices, Tim McManus names his addition to Philly’s nest as one of this franchise’s best-case scenarios for the offseason in a recent team preview he cooked up.
Here’s some of what he had to say:
"(The best-case scenario for the Eagles is that) they land an impact edge rusher and quality veteran receiver to address two areas of need. The Eagles finished second-to-last in sacks last year (29). With defensive end Brandon Graham coming off a ruptured Achilles and (Derek) Barnett likely to depart in free agency, they need to pour serious resources into this position. Haason Reddick and Jadeveon Clowney are among some of the notable names scheduled for free agency. The offense, meanwhile, is screaming for a seasoned receiver to pair with Smith. A Smith-Mike Williams duo could be pretty nasty."
We like the idea of the DeVonta Smith/Mike Williams duo. Count us out of any theories that end in Jadeveon Clowney donning the midnight green Eagles jersey.
McManus also mentions the rumors of the Philadelphia Eagles being in the hunt for a veteran/big name signal-caller as one of his burning questions about this team in the offseason. Jason Kelce’s retirement and the failure to retool the secondary gets a mention as his worst-case scenario for the team. We’d have to agree. As it is every March and April, the next two months will give us plenty to talk about concerning
