4 QBs in NFL Draft carousel the Philadelphia Eagles must avoid
Sam Howell isn’t giving the Eagles any reason to get excited.
Arguments can be made for giving Sam Howell lower draft-day grades than Desmond Ridder and Matt Corral, but in all honesty, he might be better. So. here’s a bold statement, one that quite a few scouts and pundits will disagree with. Howell is probably among the five best quarterbacks in this class, and he could go on to have a better career than Ridder, Corral, and Maik Willis.
This theory could change between now and the end of April, but for now, we’ll place Howell third on the list of the 2022 draft class’s signal-callers behind Willis and Kenny Pickett. The 2021 college football season was a mixed bag for him. He was up and down, but even though he didn’t see the defenses in the ACC that Corral saw in the SEC, we have to be fair. Corrall lost a lot of weapons that he had at his disposal in 2020.
He’ll need a nice showing at the NFL Scouting Combine and his Pro Day after having a decent Senior Bowl that was, at best, average to slightly above average. He threw for 3,056 yards and tossed 24 touchdowns in 2021, but again, that was a dropoff from the previous two seasons where he threw for 3,641 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2019 and another 3,586 yards and 30 scores in 2020.
Ahead of 2022’s offseason, some have given him second-day draft grades. Others have called him a poor man’s ‘Baker Mayfield’. Perhaps you feel differently, but in most circles, it’s hard to get that vision in your head without feeling like you should pass. We’ll see how he progresses as we move through the pre-draft process.
