FOX analyst proposes insane trade involving Eagles, Russell Wilson
The Eagles have seen a bad idea like this one play out before.
A trade of the magnitude that Cowherd is suggesting reminds us of a time when the Minnesota Vikings, in an attempt to acquire Herschel Walker, entered into a trade with the Dallas Cowboys that involved what was then the San Diego Chargers what would eventually involve 18 other players and multiple draft picks.
In the end, the Cowboys wound up with linebackers Jesse Solomon and David Howard along with defensive end Alex Stewart and cornerback Isaac Holt. The Vikings got Walker, Dallas’ third-round and 10th-round picks in 1990, and their third-rounder in 1991. The Chargers landed running back Darrin Nelson, but this is the best part.
Dallas received Minnesota’s first-round, second-round, and sixth-round picks in 1990, and they got conditional first and second-round draft choices in 1991 as well as conditional first-round, second-round, and third-round selections in 1992.
The Cowboys were one of the game’s worst teams at the time. Let’s just say Minnesota handed them three Super Bowls. The Vikes, however, are still looking for their first.
Can you see what you get when you mortgage the future?
If Philly was on the verge of making a serious Super Bowl rin and Wilson was the final piece to the puzzle, then maybe you can entertain a blockbuster trade. Two first-rounders seems like a high price to pay though. Four first-rounders and Darius Slay is totally out of the question, especially seeing as how the Birds have so many needs.
So, in terms of the trade that Cowherd is suggesting, we say thanks but no thanks. Again, these are the types of decisions that put teams in a bad spot for years, and for Philadelphia, those four first-rounders could mean the difference in changing the direction of the franchise immediately or staring up at the Cowboys for the next five years.
Let’s move on. We feel we’ve successfully put this idea to rest.
