CBS Sports believes Eagles must make one ‘critical’ move this offseason
This is a huge offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles and their third-year quarterback, Jalen Hurts. How many times have you heard that? Truthfully, the phrase sounds redundant, doesn’t it? Isn’t every offseason important? Doesn’t just about every evaluation of the quarterback position hinge on what they do next?
You get the idea about why certain statements are made though. We all do. Everyone just wants to see their squad move towards greater heights because, as Hurts put it before Philadelphia officially put the stamp on this season, every team that didn’t raise the Vince Lombardi Trophy missed out on their ultimate goal this past February.
Philly, despite making the postseason to close the 2021-2022 regular season, hasn’t quite arrived yet. If nothing changed between now and next September, no one would be surprised if they made a return trip to the playoffs, but no one would be surprised if they were on the outside looking in either. How Hurts progresses will have bearing on all of that.
CBS Sports shares the one ‘critical’ move the Eagles have to make in 2022’s offseason.
Unless you live in Cleveland, Detroit, or Cincinnati, prior to the Bengals’ most recent season, of course, February, March, and April can feel like the playoffs. There are no games to play. No one has any wins on the ledger (or any losses). It feels like every team has a chance, even if we know every team doesn’t.
Sorry Browns and Lions fans, this won’t be the year either, but there’s a slight buzz building in the City of Brotherly Love, even if it’s a minimal one. The question is this. How do they go from being a nine-win to becoming a perennial playoff contender?
They have draft capital. They have money to spend. Sure, that’s a start, but yes, Philadelphia has to nail this offseason from a signing and draft standpoint. According to CBS Sports, however, that isn’t the most important move they’ll need to make.
Recently, they shared their theories on the most ‘critical’ move every NFL team will need to make this offseason, and as you might imagine, Jalen Hurts becomes part of the discussion when we begin discussing the Philadelphia Eagles.
Jason La Canfora is the writer of this one, and it appears that getting off to a good start, in his mind, means the Birds have to make sure QB1 is happy. Here’s what he had to say on the subject.
"Commit to Jalen Hurts for one more season. Build around him with that bounty of picks. Maybe take a flier on Carson Strong somewhere on Day Two in the draft. But don’t force a QB selection with this murky class of passers."
It seems simple enough. It’s also a theory that we’ve heard on more than one occasion. The Birds leadership structure has to be strategic in upgrading the roster.
There’s a ton of chemistry forming in the Eagles locker room which is an undervalued but important part of the journey. Jalen Hurts, regardless of where you sit on how he’s developed, has a tremendous amount of respect in the locker room. This team plays hard for him and plays hard when they’re on the field with him. If you don’t think that’s important, think again.
Now, that doesn’t mean the Birds shouldn’t look under every stone and explore every option. They definitely need to do so. For that reason and that reason alone, we’ll disagree with what La Canfora said slightly.
Sure, Jalen Hurts is tremendously mature and a natural leader. The only questions that we all have are whether or not he’ll take huge strides as we move forward and whether or not the Eagles brass will be true to their word and put pieces around him to ensure his success.
