Eagles will get an extended look at Baker Mayfield this summer
These days, it’s just as easy to bring up the Philadelphia Eagles and talk about another team’s disgruntled quarterback as it is to mention the guy they have in house. You know, QB1 Jalen Hurts, a.k.a. the guy they’re supposed to be building around.
Though seemingly committed to the man that’s been their starter in 19 of the past 21 regular-season Eagles games (and one nasty looking loss in the Wild Card Round this past postseason), Philly’s behavior, at times, resembles a significant other we’ve all unfortunately encountered while dating.
They haven’t actually cheated on you yet, but you’re well aware of the fact that they have this wandering eye.
Don’t be shocked when Baker Mayfield’s name links with the Eagles in some rumor soon.
Let’s not act like we’re shocked by the fact that the Eagles have publicly stated, on more than one occasion, that Jalen Hurts is their guy and no one totally believes that they’re sold on what they’re saying.
Truthfully, seeing as how Hurts is a second-round draft choice that some believe Philly reached on when they took him, they’d be unwise not to continue in their evaluation of his play. While Jalen’s looked very good on some occasions, he’s also looked lost during others.
That’s nothing to complain about though. That’s par for the course in terms of a young signal-caller, so if you’re of the opinion that Philly should be patient, give yourselves a high-five. A 9-10 win-loss total in those aforementioned 19 starts isn’t going to cut it.
That’s why every mention of Aaron Rodgers’ or Russell Wilson’s name gets everyone’s attention. All it takes is for some news about a disgruntled player wanting out of his current situation and for that guy to play a position of need to get the rumor mill churning.
Here’s a name that we haven’t mentioned in conjunction with the Philadelphia Eagles so far this offseason: Baker Mayfield. That could change soon though as, according to The Athletic’s Zach Berman and Zac Jackson, the Birds will spend some time hanging out in Cleveland this summer for joint training camp practices with the Browns. That would also mean that the Browns are one of the Eagles’ three preseason opponents.
Now, don’t read what hasn’t been written. No one’s reporting that the Eagles are interested in Mayfield. Frankly, we don’t want him. If that’s an alternative, then the best course of action would be to stick with Jalen Hurts, but you know how these things go.
The Browns, like the Eagles, don’t seem to be sold on their QB. Mayfield could be one of those guys that need a change of scenery. If we’re hanging out in August, these discussions are still taking place, and Baker Mayfield wows versus the Eagles defense during those joint practices, don’t you for a second, think that you won’t hear someone ask the question. Again, that’s all it takes for a rumor to begin.
Gosh, is that what we’ve come to? Are we so much in love with the NFL that we’ll say anything?
Who are we kidding? These days, Troy Aikman could buy some gas in Philadelphia and we’d spend two hours dishing on that. Blame the news outlets. Blame social media. Heck, blame the NFL for making us wait so long between the end of the Super Bowl and the beginning of the NFL Combine.
We need a little football action around these parts. We’re starting to get a little bored while waiting.
