Eagles free agency: Risky wide receivers who are still worth considering
Placing former Cowboys on the Eagles roster is always a testy subject.
We obviously haven’t had the fortune of meeting every Eagles fan. We do, however, know enough of them to know that their disdain for that team in Texas hasn’t lessened one inch.
Birds fans despise the Dallas Cowboys so much that they won’t even draft their players onto their Fantasy team, so any conversation about pursuing one of their players in free agency is a testy topic. It’s been a couple of years, and we still aren’t certain that it’s safe for Orlando Scandrick to walk the streets of Philly alone.
In terms of free agency and the wide receiver position, it’s hard to talk about some of the impending prospects we expect to be available and not take a moment to discuss Amari Cooper, who made our list of potential cap casualties the Eagles can potentially pursue at the wide receiver position, and fellow Cowboy Michael Gallup.
In 55 regular-season games with Dallas, Gallup has hauled in 55 percent of the passes that have been tossed in his direction, which isn’t great, but he has 193 snags, 2,902 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns on his NFL resume after four seasons.
In 2021, he was placed on the Cowboys’ injured reserve twice, once after suffering a calf injury in Week 1, and again in Week 17 (after being activated off of IR on November 13). The second injury was more concerning, a torn ACL he sustained while catching a touchdown pass versus the Arizona Cardinals.
Any time a guy returns from injury, there are question marks, but in terms of Gallup, despite potentially being seen as one of the top ten free agents at the position, it’s easy to ask if he would have produced more on an offense in which he would have been one of the focal points and whether or not he’d shrink in an offense where he’s asked to do more. Successful arguments can be made for both sides.
