Eagles should take an extended look at NFL Draft prospect Chad Muma

The Wyoming Cowboys have been playing college football since 1893. They’ve amassed an overall record that’s sub-.500 over that time (548 wins, 590 losses, and 28 ties), but they’ve also found their way into 17 bowl games, nine of which ended with them putting a checkmark in the win column. That’s a long-winded way of saying this. No Philadelphia Eagles fan that hasn’t been paying attention to what Craig Bohl and Tom Burman are doing in the Mountain West Conference should have their feet held to the fire.

There’s an old saying in scouting circles though. Scout the player and not the helmet. After all, few saw the Eagles selection of Milton Williams in Round 3 of the 2021 NFL Draft coming. We like SEC guys, so there was some obvious hesitation about what the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs’ best player might be able to do.

Almost one full year has gone by, and we’ve learned that Milton is a baller, so with that being said, for an Eagles team that seems to get an adrenaline rush from feeling like they find diamonds in the rough at a much higher rate than anyone else, here’s a look at a big fish who spent his NCAA career playing in a small pond.

Chad Mumu is a future NFL star the Eagles ought to pay attention to.

Had Wyoming’s stud linebacker Chad Muma played in the Big Ten or SEC, we’d be talking about him every five minutes. We understand why we don’t. Who you play matters, and there’s a huge difference in Nakobe Dean dismantling the Michigan Wolverines and Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff and Muma beating up on Kent State, UConn, and Northern Illinois.

Trust us on this one though. Muma is a baller.  At the time of this story being written and published, CBS Sports sees him as the fourth-best linebacker in the coming NFL Draft. Only Devin Lloyd (Utah Utes), Nakobe Dean (Georgia Bulldogs), and Dean’s teammate, Quay Walker, rank higher.

In 33 career games with the Wyoming Cowboys (we hate the nickname by the way), Muma tallied 266 total tackles, including 145 of the solo variety and 19 tackles that resulted in a loss of yardage. He also racked 5.5 sacks, three interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble.

We often describe defensive stars by stating they’re everywhere or ‘all over the field’. Muma is truly everywhere. He ends his collegiate career with consecutive First-Team All-Mountain West Conference honors. He’s also a Third-Team AP All-American for the 2021 NCAA football season.

The Eagles ignore Nakobe Dean in this mock draft. light. Trending

This may not be a slam-dunk for the Philadelphia Eagles. This may not even be someone that they’re considering. Heck, most of us would prefer that they go all-in for Bobby Wagner, but if Philly elects against taking a linebacker in Round 1 again, which is a possibility, they could try and add a piece in Round 2.

Chad Muma should be available on Round 2. It may be time for the Eagles to study a little film and watch a little Mountain West Conference football. If they haven’t already.
