Eagles had a deal done to acquire Calvin Ridley, per report
In a league that houses 32 franchises, 32 front offices, and 1,700 players, there can often be a lot to talk about. Throw in Twitter feeds, Instagram posts, and TikTok dances, and every post has the potential to become newsworthy. With free agency on the docket and an NFL Draft to prepare for, every Philadelphia Eagles story can engulf or overshadow the last one, but here’s one that’s worth a mention.
According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, prior to Calvin Ridley‘s suspension, the Eagles had hammered out a deal to get him to Philadelphia. Buckle up. This one’s interesting.
The Philadelphia Eagles were oh so close!
No NFL fan has to be reminded of who Jay Glazer is. He’s, more than likely, a constant in each of your Twitter feeds. John Clark, for the uninitiated, is a fixture at NBC Sports Philadelphia and one of Philly Sports’ most trusted voices. Their roads intersected recently as Glazer made an appearance on Clark’s Takeoff podcast.
It sounds like the Birds had hammered out a deal to get Ridley to town before the Atlanta Falcons backed out. Take a look.
"It was actually funny because they were one of the teams, they were close to a deal with Atlanta for Calvin Ridley, and Atlanta backed out at the last second. And Philly was like, ‘What’s going on?’ And they couldn’t really tell them. And so Philly wasn’t too happy but after [the Ridley suspension news broke] was like, OK, Atlanta did business the right way. They weren’t allowed to say anything, the legalities of it. They weren’t allowed to say a word. They just had to pull out. But, man, Philly could’ve gotten Calvin Ridley if he didn’t have these issues, that would’ve been good for them. But, again, Howie is always really aggressive. That would’ve been big."
Here’s more on the subject. We found this one hanging out on the trusty Twitter timeline.
Credit the Falcons for good and decent business practices. Glazer also stated Atlanta knew of Ridley’s possible suspension early and, although the Eagles were in the dark about their reasons for doing so, Falcons leadership backed away from the negotiating table.
Throw this one in the category of those things that get swallowed up by bigger stories, you know stories like Ridley’s suspension and reports that Deshaun Watson won’t face criminal charges, though word has it that Watson figures not to land in the City of Brotherly Love either.
The bigger and more important thought to keep in mind here is Philly’s being aggressive in their attempts to upgrade the roster and add pieces to transform this team into a legitimate contender. Might D.K. Metcalf be on their offseason shopping list?
One can never tell, but here’s what we can say with confidence. It’s going to be a much more intriguing offseason than that in years past seeing as how this team has draft capital and money to spend.
