The Eagles must inquire about free agents Marcus Williams and Bobby Wagner.

It’s been a while since the Eagles have entered an offseason with this type of coin available to help them be competitive during the first wave of free agency, and who are we kidding? Most Birds enthusiasts would rather see them buy some talent than rely on their ability to evaluate what’s available in the draft.

Heck, these days, it’s hard to trust Howie’s decisions in free agency. That can also be blamed on the fact that he’s spent so much time trying to become cap compliant that, while other teams are getting first dibs on the bigger fish in free agency’s pool, Philadelphia, once they get themselves to the allowable level, are having to take chances on guys that may or may not work when shopping in the bargain bin (see Ryan Kerrigan).

Let’s make long stories shorter. A splash signing or two would be nice. We feel like we deserve that. Adding Marcus Williams helps to ease the transition of moving on from Rodney McLeod and Anthony Harris. Adding a player of Bobby Wagner‘s ability would give the Birds something they haven’t had in ages, a legitimate Pro Bowler at the defense’s second level to wreak havoc on a game-in and game-out basis.

Signing both could be an impossibility, but if the Birds pull it off, they’re in business with two of the best players at their respective positions. If this doesn’t work and secondary options are needed, we’d gladly take someone like cornerback Carlton Davis, safety Marcus Maye, and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell as consolation prizes (or two of the three if that’s doable).
