NFL free agents Eagles, Howie Roseman should be praised for ignoring

Well, it seems that, technically, the Eagles haven’t ignored Stephon Gilmore.

They play two different positions, but there are a ton of similarities that Jadeveon Clowney and Stephon Gilmore. They both attended South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. They both cut their teeth under Steve Spurrier as members of the South Carolina Gamecocks football program.

Stephon Gilmore is a five-time Pro Bowler (2016, 2018–2021), a two-time First-Team All-Pro (2018, 2019), a Super Bowl champion, and 2019’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year, but as easy as he is to like, we have to be honest. He’s relying on reputation now more than results. He isn’t the player that led the NFL in interceptions anymore.

The Eagles have a massive hole at the outside cornerback position opposite Darius Slay. Acquiring Stephon Gilmore at this stage of his career would be a massive investment, and the unfortunate reality for any team that signs him is the fact he won’t be able to provide what they’re hoping.

That hasn’t stopped the Birds from inquiring about his services though as Stephon’s wife, Gabrielle Gilmore, revealed via her Twitter account that the Birds have already made the phone call. Take a look:

Age catches up to everyone eventually, and for as good as Stephon Gilmore has been, it’s time to accept the fact that he’s on the downside of what’s been a great career. The Eagles haven’t pulled the trigger yet, and it’s probably unwise to. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t thinking about it though.
