Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie adds non-football-related feather to his cap
Once upon a time, a film and television producer by the name of Jeffrey Lurie bought the Philadelphia Eagles from Norman Braman on May 6th of 1994 for $195 million. It was the most that had ever been paid to purchase an NFL franchise at the time. Fast forward, and in 2017, Forbes valued the club at $2.65 billion. That earned them a spot among pro football’s ten most valuable teams.
We’re going to go out on a limb here and say that things are working out for Mr. Lurie. Under his watch, the Birds have enjoyed the longest run of consistency in franchise history.
Sure, there have been ups and downs. That happens in the NFL, but there are a lot of teams that would sign up for six NFC Championship Game appearances, two Super Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl win over the course of a 30-year stretch. Go ask the Detroit Lions or Cleveland Browns if they’d take that deal.
Could things be better? Sure, they could, but despite what you’ve seen from the New England Patriots, dynasties are the exception to the rule. Jeffrey Lurie should be proud of what he’s done with this organization, and recently, he added another feather in his cap as well.
Eagles Chairman Jeffrey Lurie earns an Oscar for ‘ Summer of Soul’.
If you caught the Oscars on television, you were witness to a treat. Summer of Soul, a documentary film released in 2021 and directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, took home the hardware for Best Documentary Feature.
Summer of Soul was produced, in part, by Lurie’s Play/Action Pictures along with Onyx Collective,
Concordia Studio, LarryBilly Productions, Mass Distraction Media, RadicalMedia, and Vulcan Productions. Searchlight Pictures has distribution rights. If you’re interested, it can be viewed on Hulu with your subscription.
Add this to another of the feathers in Lurie’s cap. It’s also a nice addition to his ever-growing resume. On second thought, can we call it that? Jeffrey Lurie hasn’t had to hand anyone his resume in years. Anyway, you get the idea.
As we’ve seen from guys like everyone’s favorite magician, Jon Dorenbos, and Philly’s starting left tackle (who knew he had the voice of an angel?), the Eagles family continues to give us cause to cheer for this entire organization both on and off the field.
