Eagles mock draft: Philadelphia trades up, bucks tradition
By Ryan Loftus
Eagles GM Howie Roseman uses his relationship with the Jets to his advantage.
It doesn’t get much more daring than trading up into the top five. Here’s a theory on how they make it work.
The Eagles never draft safeties in the first round. In 1980, they took Roynell Young, a cornerback/safety hybrid out of Alcorn State, but they haven’t considered any similar move since then. If you remember, they passed on Earl Thomas.
2022 brings new beginnings though. With their shiny new draft choice, Philadelphia adds a major piece for their secondary by taking Kyle Hamilton. He’s one of the draft’s best players.
There’s a strong case for taking an edge rusher with this pick, but following the signing of Haason Reddick, the Eagles go with Hamilton to help shore up the backend of their defense that, as of now, features Marcus Epps and Anthony Harris as its starters.
There have been questions about whether or not there’s any possibility of Derek Stingley could fall to the Eagles in Round 1, and in this scenario, he does. At the 15th-overall selection, and with the Eagles having no other picks until the 83rd-overall selection in Round 3, they take the best player available and take the best player available, Derek Stingley.
He’s a six-foot-one, 195-pound standout that could start immediately opposite Darius Slay. He’d be a welcomed addition to the secondary and the defensive backs meeting room.
