Less-mentioned WRs Eagles can target during every round of NFL Draft
Velus Jones is a third-day prospect who could be a steal for the Eagles (or someone else).
When we get into Day 3 and the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, we expect to hear some serious conversations about some of the lesser-mentioned SEC wide receivers. You can throw Dontario Drummond’s name in that discussion (Ole Miss Rebels). You can also bring up Velus Jones of the Tennessee Volunteers program.
The latter hauled in 62 receptions for 807 yards and reached the end zone seven times despite being, shall we say, limited by the inconsistencies he sometimes had to deal with in the passing game.
Jones could be a fourth-round or a fifth-round steal for the NFL team that winds up taking him. At six-foot-tall and 204 pounds, he made a huge leap from his 2020 campaign to become an SEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Year and a First-team All-SEC nod in 2021, but he struggled at the Senior Bowl as he dropped a lot of passes. Perhaps that could be some of the explanation for the third-day grades.
He did impress, however, with a 4.31-second 40-yard dash time at the most recent scouting combine. Who doesn’t love a speed option at the wide receiver position that can rack up huge chunks of yards in a hurry?
