It wouldn’t be a typical workweek unless we were tossing theories back and forth about possible Philadelphia Eagles acquisitions. Some of the constant chatter surrounding Tyrann Mathieu has calmed, but nothing suggests that a potential deal is dead in the water, but for whatever reason, the offense has been a huge topic of discussion as of late.

Why? Well, it’s quite simple actually. There was hope that, as we entered the offseason, Philly would upgrade the talent around Jalen Hurts with, at minimum, one more threat to cause headaches to opposing defenses on the outside. Vice president/general manager Howie Roseman, instead, went the route of re-signing guys we already knew, Boston Scott, Greg Ward, and Nate Herbig.

Now, that shouldn’t be viewed as failure. When used appropriately, Scott and Ward have proven that they can ball. Herbig should continue to improve as a depth piece for the offensive line, but Philly’s last two signings at wideout, Zach Pascal and Devon Allen, were very concerning.

If the Eagles were stocked at wideout and just needed a few bodies to round out the depth chart, that would be one thing, but when you still have Jalen Reagor and JJ Arcega-Whiteside on the roster, Jarvis Landry sitting unsigned on the free-agent market, and a huge need for talent, you can’t add Pascal and Allen.

The former received lower grades from Pro Football Focus than Reagor did in 2021. The latter is a track star that hasn’t played football since 2016. Think about that for a second. Is there any doubt why there’s a growing interest in Deebo Samuel?

Don’t get your hopes up. Deebo may already be out of the Eagles’ price range.

Glancing at the Eagles’ salary cap space and knowing that Deebo Samuel is on quite a few wish lists should lead you all to the same conclusion if you’ve been paying attention. Raise your hand if you’re clueless on how this could work and how Philly could get a deal done.

That isn’t stopping anyone from furthering the narrative or expressing their desire to pursue a trade. Take a look.

Samuel, a Pro Bowler and First-Team All-Pro in 2021, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023. As you know, that’s typically when these young guys who are still on their rookie deals begin asking for new contracts. It doesn’t look like if there have been conversations between Samuel and the San Francisco 49ers that he’s gotten what he’s looking for.

Recently, he removed all references to the San Francisco 49ers from his social media accounts, and according to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, the six-foot, 215-pound do-it-all weapon is seeking “a contract in the range of about $25 million per year”.

The Eagles, having some very expensive players on their roster, Fletcher Cox, Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, Darius Slay, and Javon Hargrave to name a few, would probably be better suited to use that type of coin to add several players instead of one.

If Samuel was the final piece of a championship puzzle, we’d all be in favor. With so many needs and with the questions being about how long we have to wait until this team re-establishes relevancy, adding Samuel feels like buying a Ferrari while being in danger of eviction while renting.

Keep an eye on this one. It will be interesting to see how things go.
