Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa couldn’t be any more similar (or different)
As is the case with the Eagles, the Dolphins have their quarterback on the hot seat.
It’s been a long time since the Dolphins drafted Tua with the fifth-overall selection. First-round quarterbacks have the most pressure on them because they are expected to deliver on day one.
Tagovaila began his journey as the backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick, but he would finally make his debut as a starter in Week 6 of that year versus the New York Jets. Throughout the regular season’s remainder, they’d lip flop between Fitzpatrick and Tagovailoa, which definitely had to hurt the confidence of the young quarterback.
Every team wants to win now, but benching your first-round pick constantly in games is not a recipe for success. They have to work through the tough patches in the game. That’s how a player grows. He definitely won’t improve by sitting.
Tua also has a bit of an injury history. We saw that at the collegiate level, and it’s followed him to the NFL. He only played in 13 games last season and only started 12 due to a rib injury.
As was the case with Hurts, there were constant rumors last season that the Dolphins were looking to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Nothing came from it, but it seems as though the Dolphins aren’t sold on Tua being the long-term answer for their franchise.
Miami and Philadelphia both have a lot of draft stock in 2023, and that could have bearing on how long both players are in their respective cities.
