Once it was announced that the Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni would be available for the media ahead of the coming 2022 NFL Draft, it was pretty obvious what they’d be asked about. Some things don’t require a ton of preparation.

Philly and the New Orleans Saints entered into a trade that involved eight draft choices over the next three selection meetings at the beginning of April. The announcement restarted a narrative around Eagles-centered circles that we’re all relatively familiar with, discussing what that meant in terms of Jalen Hurts’ future.

The general consensus and overwhelming theory were Philly was positioning themselves with the ammunition needed to make a serious run at landing a quarterback in 2023 if the next Jalen Hurts audition, his second in as many seasons, doesn’t end with signs that he’s the quarterback of the Eagles’ future.

As you might expect, it didn’t take long for that question to be asked during Howie and Nick’s April 20th sit-down. As you might expect his answer was exactly what you’d expect it to be.

Eagles GM Howie Roseman says his trade with the Saints was about ‘flexibility’, not Jalen Hurts.

If you’re someone who’s a huge Jalen Hurts supporter, and you want his assignment as Eagles QB1 to become more permanent, fear not. According to Howie, the deal with the Saints was about flexibility, not finding his replacement.

There’s no need to take our word for it. Check out Howie’s words for yourself. Was Philly’s trade orchestrated because there may be some concern about Hurts? Here’s what the GM had to say on the subject.

On his feelings about the Philadelphia Eagles’ QB1 of the moment, Jalen Hurts, Roseman offered the following.

"We’re excited about Jalen Hurts, you know,? We’re gonna support Jalen and want him to have a great career in Philly. This was about flexibility for our team and about making sure that we had resources to improve our team for not only this year’s draft, but next year’s draft going forward. We thought it made a lot of sense."

Here’s more of what was said in terms of the continual learning curve that comes with playing the quarterback position in the NFL.

"You’re constantly evaluating the things you did wrong (and) learning from the things you did right. With Jalen, I know he’s working his butt off."

We know that too. No one questions Jalen’s work ethic or who he is from the shoulders up. People are worried about whether or not he can stand in the pocket, see the open guys, and deliver the ball on time more consistently than we’ve seen him do it.

Some believe patience is required and rightfully so. Others believe QB1 is a very likable guy that deserves respect but tops out as a good quarterback, nothing more and nothing less. There’s a growing contingent that believes the Eagles organization, regardless of what they are saying, believes the same thing.

They certainly aren’t going to bash him and do so publicly. Why would they? There’s no reason to, but despite the fact that Howie’s answered the same question for the 20th time now and the Eagles’ leadership structure continues to back their guy, no one believes Philly isn’t positioning themselves to grab a signal-caller at some point down the road if the current arrangement doesn’t work. They certainly haven’t done much to upgrade the offensive roster around him.
