How would adding a top-tier cover guy shake up the Eagles’ cornerback room?

Okay, here’s what we know. Darius Slay is the best cornerback on the Eagles’ roster, and based on his recent Pro Bowl selection, he’s also one of the best league-wide. Say what you want about Jonathan Gannon, but Avonte Maddox had his best season under the watch of Philly’s new defensive coordinator.

He has the slot cornerback position locked down, and based on the Eagles’ three-year, $22.5 million investment they made in him back on November 20th, they’re banking on him being a part of their immediate future (pun intended). Past those two, there are a lot of bodies and few answers.

Steven Nelson got tired of playing what many of us thought was a waiting game. He’s signed with the Houston Texans. The Birds re-signed Andre Chachere. They also have Tay Gowan, Craig James, Mac McCain III, Zech McPhearson, Kary Vincent, and Josiah Scott in the fold.

Buyer's remorse and the 2020 NFL Draft. light. Trending

Philadelphia enters another NFL Draft knowing they need a legitimate starter to man the opposite side of the formation from Big Play Slay. They could address that need early. No one would object if they add two guys in the draft. With ten picks, it may be hard to rule that theory out (and wise for them to do so).

Don’t change that dial. The Birds have been linked to several cover guys during the pre-draft process. Adding one upgrades this secondary immediately, and it could lead to a shakeup where one or two of these young prospects leaves the nest entirely.
