3 Eagles under intense pressure in 2022 who are not named Jalen Hurts
Can Fletcher Cox give one last great performance in an Eagles uniform?
One of the longest-tenured Eagles finds his way onto this list as the 2022-2023 NFL season might double as ‘one last ride’ in Philadelphia for one of the greatest Birds of all time. Philly may have introduced us to his replacement after making Jordan Davis the 13th-overall selection of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Fletcher Cox isn’t what he once was, but the coming season could be his opportunity to show potential suitors that he hasn’t run out of gas and still has some tread left on the tires. Cox is on a mission to prove he’s still valuable to this Eagles team and/or the final piece to a team looking to contend for a Super Bowl.
Last season, Cox posted a paltry 3.5 sacks and 35 tackles (a career-low in stops). That’s not what you’re looking for from a man that commands the salary that Number 91 commands. The ‘well, he’s being double-teamed’ theory is false. Cox is seeing double-teams less often. He’s, unfortunately, experiencing some regression as he’s not the man he once was.
Then again, he could just need a change of scenery. Cox’s situation is much like what we saw from Ndamukong Suh, who had a down year when he was 30 with the Miami Dolphins but then signed a similar one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams.
Suh produced, and he helped lead the Rams to the Super Bowl to conclude the 2018-2019 season. That turned into a pair of one-year deals with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $17 million. He wound up winning a Super Bowl in the process.
Cox’s story doesn’t have to be over. He’s one of a boatload of potential Eagles free agents. All are experiencing the pressure of having to perform this season. It will be interesting to see how things play out.
