It was evident early and often that the Philadelphia Eagles/Genard Avery arrangement wouldn’t work.
Every year, there’s a trade deadline. Every year, whenever it nears, we hope and pray that Howie Roseman will make some roster-altering addition that infuses life into the fan base and locker room. More often than not, nothing happens.
Philly did make a move in 2019 however as they sent a fourth-round draft choice in 2021’s selection meeting to the Cleveland Browns to acquire Genard Avery. There was some excitement though it was minimal. Most of it was generated by Browns fans that seemed to be upset that Cleveland’s leadership structure allowed Avery to get out of the door.
In theory, the move made sense. Adding Avery in October of 2019 would, in essence, give him the jump on the 2020 season. Well, things don’t always work out as we hope. In the end, former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz didn’t know how to use Avery. Jonathan Gannon didn’t seem to have a plan for him last season. Avery was allowed to walk during the most recent free agency frenzy.
He’s now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers after having signed a one-year deal with them on March 28th. In total, he racked up 55 total tackles in 35 regular-season games with 12 starts. He appeared in one playoff game (last season) and made one tackle.
