Eagles quarterback preseason report cards following Browns game
Gardner Minshew again led the Eagles’ second-team offense to the end zone.
Best throw: Gardner Minshew gets the ball out in a hurry! There’s no hesitation with him! He had a nice showing. It was hard to find flaws in his performance, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find things that can be tweaked in practice. After all, no one’s perfect.
Sometimes, even when someone hauled in a reception from Number 10’s arm, it was difficult to determine if we were seeing a good throw or a better catch by a receiver that was bailing him out. There was no doubt on this one though.
With the game clock winding down, Minshew delivered a nice back-shoulder throw to Deon Cain with 3:49 remaining. That one set the Birds up with first-and-goal inside the Browns’ five-yard line. They didn’t score, but no one will complain about them attempting to convert a fourth down in a game that doesn’t count, but what transpired in the execution was Minshew’s worst throw of the day. It also ended the drive.
Worst throw: This time, the quick release hurt him. His final throw of the first half should have been a pick-six. In truth, there were at least two of his throws that you could say the same thing about, but this one definitely should have gone in the opposite direction.
Minshew isn’t the playmaker that Jalen Hurts is, but fans should feel pretty good if he’s forced into action. He finished his day with 14 completions on 17 attempts, 142 yards through the air, and most importantly, two touchdown drives. All in all, he had a solid day.
