All eyes are on Indianapolis and another NFL Scouting Combine. The Philadelphia Eagles and 31 other NFL franchises are busy building their 2023-2024 NFL rosters. Something told us that even though we had been told that they’d be thorough in the process of filling the coaching vacancies they had that we’d see some movement ahead of the offseason’s largest scouting event. We were right.

On the final day of February, they announced five coaching staff changes. If you missed that, here’s the rundown.

  • Brian Johnson, offensive coordinator
  • Sean Desai, defensive coordinator
  • Alex Tanney, quarterbacks coach
  • Marcus Brady, senior offensive assistant
  • T.J. Paganetti, run game specialist/assistant tight ends coach

They’re still in need of a linebackers coach as that position remains vacant after Nick Rallis followed Jonathan Gannon to Arizona to be their defensive coordinator, but it appears there may be yet another move by Philly to bolster this coaching staff.

Don’t rule out the possibility of Mike Pettine joining the Eagles coaching staff in some capacity.

According to Inside The Birds Co-Founder and host Geoff Mosher, Mike Pettine is another familiar name that can be added to Philly’s mix before too long. He’s currently the Minnesota Vikings’ assistant head coach, and it appears he’s on Philly’s radar, especially now that Sean Desai has accepted his position as the Birds’ new defensive coordinator.

Prior to Desai’s run with the Seattle Seahawks as an associate head coach and defensive assistant this past season, he served as the Chicago Bears’ defensive quality control coach from 2013 until 2018 and as their safeties coach in 2019 and 2020 before taking over as their defensive coordinator in 2021.

It was in 2021 that Pettine joined the Bears staff as a senior defensive assistant. There, he and Desai got to know one another, so adding someone like Pettine to Phlly’s staff makes sense.

Prior to his time in Chicago and Minnesota, he spent time at the NFL level with the Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks, and Green Bay Packers. In total his NFL coaching tenure spans more than 20 seasons.

He’d bring a lot of experience to an Eagles coaching staff that has, at times, been criticized for its lack thereof. Keep your eyes on this one as we move through the NFL Scouting Combine’s proceedings. We shouldn’t be surprised if there are announcements.
