History repeats as Gardner Minshew joins Shane Steichen in Indianapolis
It appears that a few Birds won’t wait until winter to fly south. They’ll be making the trip to ensure they arrive in time to enjoy some springtime weather. One day after Miles Sanders’ time in the City of Brotherly Love ended, news breaks that Gardner Minshew will leave the Keystone State to join his offensive coordinator of the past two seasons, Shane Steichen, as both begin new ventures as head coach and quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.
History has a way of repeating itself, doesn’t it?
The last time a former Eagles quarterback joined a former Eagles offensive coordinator in Indianapolis, things didn’t go well. We’ll see how Gardner Minshew does.
They say the NFL is a copycat league. Teams that are successful typically see their assistant coaches poached by the bottom-feeders when the latter begins searching for its next head coach. Stop us if you’ve heard this story before.
Following an Eagles Super Bowl appearance to conclude the 2017-2018 NFL season, their offensive coordinator was hired by the Indianapolis Colts. If you’re new around these parts, here’s what happened.
Five years ago, after hoisting the first Vince Lombardi Trophy in Eagles franchise history, Frank Reich traded midnight green for speed blue. Four years later, he “stuck his neck out” for Carson Wentz, and a trade between Philly and Indy reconnected them. Long story short, that marriage didn’t work out too well.
At the conclusion of this past season, the Colts were again in the market for a head coach. They replaced one former Eagles O.C. (Reich) with another, Shane Steichen. As fate would have it, this decision again followed an Eagles Super Bowl appearance. This one, unfortunately, resulted in an Eagles loss.
Shane is adding his former Eagles QB earlier than Frank did. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Colts have signed Gardner Minshew. He, in the minds of some, hung out in free agency’s pool longer than some thought he would, but at long last, he has found a new home.
He figures to battle Sam Ehlinger for the starting quarterback position. Nick Foles is also on the roster. It hasn’t happened yet, but it appears the Colts are becoming ‘Philadelphia Eagles South’. Expect Birds fans to pay more attention to some of their games this season if the time doesn’t conflict with an Eagles game.
