NFL executive predicts Jalen Hurts may assist Eagles by signing team-friendly deal
It’s hard to remember a time when so many people have talked about another man’s money so much. Following a season that resulted in a trip by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl, a near-MVP-winning season by Jalen Hurts, and a slight dismantling of some of the core that helped that Super Bowl run become possible however people are curious.
Every offseason, we discuss the salary cap, Howie Roseman’s ability to make lemonade out of lemons, and the annual holes that need to be filled (running back, linebacker, safety), but this time around, things are different. This time around, we’re doing so after a Super Bowl loss while there appears to be a championship window open. This time around, we’re discussing a quarterback who played on a salary that allowed the Eagles to surround him with talent, and now that quarterback has earned an opportunity to cash in.
We expect Jalen Hurts’ extension to be announced sooner rather than later. Howie typically strikes early when matters like these are at hand. Admittedly, however, no one knows when a deal will be reached. Recently, another publication, after speaking with an NFL executive, added a few theories on the subject, and their take shares a few theories on what QB1 might be thinking.
The Athletic’s Mike Sando spoke with NFL executives and has learned there’s a theory that Jalen Hurts will go the route of signing a team-friendly deal.
Calling Jalen Hurts’ 2022-2023 salary a bargain would be a massive understatement. It isn’t often that MVP candidates count as $1.6 million against the salary cap and lead their team to the Super Bowl, but from a financial perspective, that’s what happens when that MVP candidate was taken in the second round and is playing on the third year of his rookie deal.
This time around, QB1 will earn $4.7 million during the 2023-2024 NFL season. We’ve made guesses about Jalen’s market value and what a new extension might look like, but we’ve done so while asking a question.
Will Jalen Hurts break the bank or accept a team-friendly deal that allows the Eagles flexibility to sign great players to team with him? He’d be well within his right to do the former. Some are hoping selfishly that he does the latter. Mike Sando of The Athletic added a nice conversation piece recently.
After speaking with NFL executives, Sando released an intriguing read on how NFL executives reacted to the moves of all 32 teams. Obviously, this one sits behind a paywall, so we won’t share any quotes here, but here’s the skinny. There’s a belief that Jalen Hurts will take one for the team.
Many theories have been shared on the subject. Everything that you can imagine has been stated. On one hand, Jalen Hurts is managed by Klutch Sports Group, and this is an enormous opportunity for them to really make a name for themselves. Helping Jalen Hurts ink a massive extension would be a phenomenal way to draw interest from other prospective clients.
Recently, Klutch promoted Nicole Lynn, Jalen Hurts’ agent. She is now the president of the agency’s football division.
On the other hand, everything we know about Jalen suggests winning means more to him than anything. Giving the Eagles a slight discount for his talents allows them to field better teams. That keeps the team competitive and allows for more flexibility to add other stars.
If Jalen were to give the Birds a break, he can make money in other ways. Endorsements are an option. He’s quickly becoming one of the faces of the NFL. It wouldn’t be difficult for him to land a few.
Ultimately, the decision is up to Jalen Hurts. We know he will be with the Eagles moving forward. Time will tell what his salary looks like. We’ll say this. The Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t be happier about having to be a part of this dilemma.
