The City of Brotherly Love isn’t like anywhere else that you have ever been. Spring training gets underway for Phillies, and Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles are still dominating the headlines. Some things never change.

We have seen this year after year. The Flyers could make an announcement, and the local sports stations will share some of the details before transitioning back to the Birds. The 76ers could be battling their tails off in an NBA playoff series, as they are now, and, you guessed it, the Jalen Hurts extension takes centerstage.

Philly has a fantastic sports history, both collegiately and professionally, but make no mistake about it. This is football country, but even with that being said, the USFL’s Stars will never hold a candle to the Eagles. Jalen Hurts, right now, is the biggest talking point in the city.

With that being said and on a morning that follows the Sixers’ Monday night win over the Brooklyn Nets, we’d like to again discuss the Jalen Hurts deal. It appears we have been given some details.

More details of the Jalen Hurts extension are announced.

It’s been a while since we have seen so many people discuss another man’s money and do so as if they were discussing some of their own. Some thought Jalen Hurts would accept a massive payday. Others thought he’d ‘take one for the team’ and ink a deal that was ‘team-friendly’. In the end, both goals were accomplished.

Jalen, his agent Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles agreed to a five-year, $255 million extension with more than $179 million guaranteed, but the most impressive components come in the structure. Details of some of the deal’s breakdown came later on Monday evening. Take a look. Thank ESPN’s Adam Schefter for the details.

  • 2023 – $6.15 million
  • 2024: $13.56 million
  • 2025: $21.77 million
  • 2026: $31.77 million

As you can see, with the costs spread out, particularly over the next four seasons, Philly has a ton of wiggle room to make needed additions to the roster moving forward.

The 2023 season is the final year of Jalen Hurts’ rookie deal. The three years that follow are favorable financially. The final two years of his deal will involve some finagling of the numbers, but give all parties involved a hand.

The accounting is as good as you can ask for when we get into conversations about how we describe deals that are team-friendly. Howie Roseman and his team get the job done again.
