Eagles announce coaching hires as Matt Patricia discussions break Twitter
Let’s rewind the tape. Just a tad over two months ago, the Philadelphia Eagles came within a few plays of winning the Super Bowl. They, then, left their defensive coordinator in Arizona. Jonathan Gannon was eventually offered and accepted the Cardinals head coaching position. Things really got interesting after that.
In two months time, Javon Hargrave joined the San Francisco 49ers. T.J. Edwards, Kyzir White, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson are gone. Shane Steichen was hired to lead the Indianapolis Colts.
The Eagles showed genuine interest in Matt Patricia for their vacant D.C. position among others. Meanwhile, Philly parted ways with their talented defensive backs coach, Dennard Wilson, and they eventually settled in Sean Desai. Brian Johnson was promoted to the O.C.’s chair and deservedly so.
One week before the 2023 NFL Draft, Philadelphia officially announced coaching changes, and they sent a shockwave through the media and the fan base.
Eagles fans break Twitter as Matt Patricia is named as a senior defensive assistant before removing the announcement from the website.
As great as Bill Belichick has been, we all have found a few chinks in his armor over the years.
- He hasn’t proven he can consistently win without Tom Brady.
- He has a spotty draft history.
- He hasn’t developed his assistant coaches into successful head coaches.
In terms of that final statement, we can all name Nick Saban as an outlier, but there are a ton of former Pats assistants who have failed and done so miserably. The Las Vegas Raiders got worse upon Josh McDaniels’ arrival, and while Brian Flores was decent, it doesn’t get much worse than Matt Patricia.
To list Patricia’s failures, we’d need to begin a separate story, but we can say this. Most thought he and Darius Slay would be a bad mix in Philly based on their history.
April 20th brought intrigue. The Eagles announced they had hired Patricia as a senior defensive assistant, and moments later, they removed the blurb from their official website. They have however named their newest additions.

Shortly after the confusion, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and vice president/general manager Howie Roseman met with the media. Coach confirmed the Eagles are trending toward hiring Patricia and the deal simply isn’t done yet.
In all honesty, we’re more interested in what the players think bout this, particularly Darius Slay. To make long stories shorter, Patricia’s reputation for being both abrasive and limited as a leader makes this entire situation concerning for obvious reasons.
