Philadelphia Eagles 2023 schedule release may be delayed per source
Much of what makes holidays great is they’re once a year and come at the same time every year. Christmas has come on December 25th for as long as we have lived (and it will continue to do so long after we’re gone). If you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan, however, Christmas comes a few times during the NFL season and offseason.
To the die-hard football fan, the NFL Scouting Combine feels like waking up to gifts under the tree. Heck, Howie Roseman played the role of Santa Claus during the three-day span of the most recent NFL Draft. Christmas even came on February 4th of 2018 when the Eagles vanquished the greatest dynasty that pro football has ever seen to deliver the first Vince Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.
Our next gift, however, might be on backorder at Amazon.
According to Peter King, the release of the Philadelphia Eagles’ schedule and that of the rest of the NFL may be delayed.
We have known who the Eagles’ opponents during the 2023-2024 NFL season are for a while. We just didn’t know when those games will take place. We thought we’d learn the answer to the latter question this week. According to NBC Sports’ Peter King and the May 8th edition of his Football Morning in America column, we may have to wait longer than expected.
Here’s his take.
"The release of the schedule, which the NFL had hoped to have for a primetime show Thursday night, may be delayed. It’s still likely to be done in time for release Thursday at 8 p.m., but I was told over the weekend it may not be finished in time. The 2023 mega-games—opening Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights, Thanksgiving Day, the new Black Friday tilt, the Sunday night game on Christmas Eve and the Monday tripleheader on Christmas—are not set in stone yet. The mega-games are usually solid by early May. The schedule crew is slated to meet with commissioner Roger Goodell this afternoon in New York, at which time more clarity on the tentpole games is expected. I’m told as of the weekend the NFL was still in search of options on the 272-game regular season slate, with a series of computers continuing to spit out alternatives."
Seeing the Eagles at rookie minicamp put a smile on our faces. We’ll take football in whatever manner it is delivered, and yes, the NFL’s schedule release feels like a gift every year. Nothing beats pulling out a pen and some paper and jotting down Ws and Ls next to each game as we make way-too-early guesses about our favorite teams’ win-loss totals.
For now, we wait. Again, think of it as an Amazon snag or the UPS truck coming after the arrival time they gave you on the day of delivery. Still, there isn’t much that beats the feeling of seeing the official regular-season schedule. Hopefully, league offices won’t make us wait too long. The next Eagles campaign can’t get here fast enough.
Update: May 8th
Crisis averted! ESPN insider Adam Schefter reports the NFL’s schedule release will indeed be on Thursday, May 11th. We can all go on with life as planned now!
