Eagles expected to earn four compensatory picks ahead of 2024 NFL Draft
Things appear to be moving fairly swiftly now. With the NFL Draft and another Philadelphia Eagles rookie minicamp in our rearview mirror, we set our sights on the next stage of the offseason process, the announcement of the 2023-2024 regular-season schedule. The Birds seem set for another impressive season.
Our fingers are crossed, but Howie Roseman has done a masterful job. He has delivered a masterclass in balancing in-the-moment decision-making to fill immediate needs. We have also seen him ‘play the long game’ if you will.
During the most recent draft, he added seven exceptional athletes and young men. The shrewd moves that he is making these past two offseasons will carry over into the next offseason as well.
That’s right. The Eagles still own a second-round choice they attained by way of the massive trade with the New Orleans Saints. The good news doesn’t stop there though.
The Eagles are expected to be awarded something in the area of four compensatory picks for the 2024 NFL Draft.
The most recent Eagles offseason began with the expected losses of key contributors on both offense and defense. Some were even starters.
Philly lost their top five tacklers from last season. One tied for the league lead in interceptions (C.J. Gardner-Johnson). They lost their leading rusher (Miles Sanders). The best young interior defensive lineman they had on last year’s roster is gone (Javon Hargrave).
Howie Roseman did an excellent job of filling holes during the free agency frenzy and the most recent NFL Draft, but that’s where the good news begins, not where it ends. Philly has comp picks coming.
Compensatory picks are awarded every season by way of a confidential formula the league uses to try and assist professional franchises that suffer major offseason losses during free agency. Picks are awarded between Rounds 3 and 7. Players’ average salaries are taken into account. So are snap counts and production. NFL Draft wiz Lance Zierlein believes the Birds have four coming their way. Here’s some of what he had to say on the subject.
"The Eagles played the compensatory pick game perfectly. They knew they would have a large number of players depart in free agency, and they didn’t add any projected qualifying free agents to the team. Philadelphia should receive the maximum number of picks, including a third-rounder for Hargrave."
We like what we’re seeing. Here’s a full list of the Eagles’ 2024 draft picks along with the additional draft capital they’re expected to earn. .
- Round 1 – (Eagles’ own pick)
- Round 2 – (Eagles’ own pick)
- Round 2 – (From the New Orleans Saints)
- Round 3 – Projected compensatory pick
- Round 5 – Via Minnesota Vikings (conditional: can become fourth-round pick)
- Round 5 – Via Buccaneers
- Round 5 – Projected compensatory pick
- Round 5 – Projected compensatory pick
- Round 6 – (Eagles’ own pick or a Titans’ sixth-rounder, whichever is better)
- Round 6 – Projected compensatory pick
As impressive as this Eagles roster is, there’s an opportunity for even more weapons to be added next offseason. We’re a long way from beginning those discussions, but it’s exciting. Two second-round choices probably ensure they’ll land a pair of key contributors.
