Ask around or listen closely and you’ll learn that, one of the things that makes the Philadelphia Eagles‘ hiring practices unique is they’re very detailed. We’ve never been a fly on the wall for one of their interviews, but we’d like to be. We hear they go on for hours. Just listen to head coach Nick Sirianni or Chairman/CEO Jeffrey Lurie discuss them. They’ll tell you.

When a franchise attacks its selection process this meticulously, no one should be shocked when they’re equally as patient in determining when they elect to introduce those guys to the local media.  They hired new defensive coordinator Sean Desai on February 28th. They promoted their quarterbacks coach, Brian Johnson, to the offensive coordinator’s chair on the same day, but we didn’t hear from either until May 11th. We have no problem with that.

You have to respect how the Eagles’ brass goes about its business, and you have to be impressed by what we heard from all three coordinators during their most recent sit-down with the press.

All three of Philly’s coordinators impressed the media with some amazing theories. Check out Eagles assistants Sean Desai and Brian Johnson.

Special teams coordinator returns for his third season as Eagles special teams coordinator. For Sean Desai, it’s his second season as a D.C. as he previously held down the same role for the Chicago Bears in 2021. As you know, this is his first run with the BIrds. Brian Johnson, as you know is the offensive coordinator. The 2023-2024 NFL season doubles as his third season with the Eagles.

First impressions aren’t everything. Just ask Coach Sirianni, but they can be important. In his first discussion with select members of the Philly sports media, he was very impressive as was offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. Here’s what both had to say.

We begin with Desai.

Brian Johnson has been an extended member of Jalen Hurts’ family since, well, before Jalen was with Jalen’s family. He lit up scoreboards at the NCAA level. He led the Utah Utes offensive attack as their O.C. from 2012 to 2013 before accepting the same job and being equally as impressive with the Houston Cougars (2017) and the Florida Gators (2020). At every stop, he earned rave reviews.

Prior to being promoted this past February, he was Philly’s QB coach during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He was the right choice to land the role of Eagles offensive coordinator. Give him a passing grade for his first presser in his new role.

The familiarity with Hurts is there. The knowledge is obvious. The resume is impressive. We just haven’t seen him attack the O.C. role at the professional level. Fear not though. Something tells us that there won’t be any issues and that Philly’s offense is going to put up a lot of points.

Hot. 5 games that will help decide the Eagles' season. light
