Ranking the opposing head coaches – The ‘maybe these guys are coordinators’ tier

Kevin O’Connell… Todd Bowles… Mike McCarthy… Sheesh! We could talk about these guys all day. Sadly, we don’t have that type of time.

player. 60. . . . Kevin O’Connell, Vikings. 12

Minnesota took a nice step forward in Kevin O’Connell’s first season as head coach… sort of. They won 13 games and a division title. Still, how you win is just as important as whether or not you do so sometimes, and there was never anything the Vikings did that made you believe they’d be ready for the postseason.

They proved to be ill-prepared for the challenge, and sure, maybe fielding a better defense will help in that regard. We can’t guarantee that the Vikes are better than the Detroit Lions though, and that says a lot.

48. . . . Todd Bowles, Buccaneers. 11. player

If this was a list of the best defensive coordinators, Todd Bowles would be at the top. This isn’t though. We’re ranking head coaches, and even though Todd has worn that title twice, it isn’t unfair to state that he may need to come to grips with the fact that he isn’t a head coach at all. He’s actually a defensive coordinator who keeps trying to do a head coach’s job.

. . Mike McCarthy, Cowboys. 10. player. 123.

How often do you look at Mike Mccarthy and laugh without knowing what it is that you’re laughing about? Oh, come on! Don’t act like it’s just us!

Mike McCarthy has won a Super Bowl. Some say that win was more about Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers (and even an injured Charles Woodson that led from the sidelines), but it is what it is. He has a ring, and we can’t take it from him.

Our analysis of Mike comes down to this though. As long as he’s the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, an argument can be made that he’s the fourth-best coach in the NFC East.
