Eagles schedule: Ranking the opposing head coaches Philly faces in 2023
Ranking the opposing HCs on the Eagles’ schedule – The ‘right man for the job’ tier
Two guys in this tier have won Super Bowls and are good enough to do so again. Two guys on this list haven’t reached the mountaintop yet, but that isn’t because they’re doing something wrong.
All of these guys deserve to continue doing what they’re doing. We’ll see how their teams do this season.
We don’t talk about Sean McDermott a lot, but we have watched him since his days as an Eagles assistant on Andy Reid’s staff. We had respect for him then. We watched him spread his wings in Carolina with the Panthers, and he has been exactly what the Buffalo Bills have needed to lead their franchise.
Don’t look now. He’s entering his seventh season as a head coach.
There are reasonable arguments for placing Pete Carroll in the top tier. If nothing else, last season should have taught you that.
Still, outside of leading his Seahawks to a postseason appearance without Russell Wilson, he’s been to two Super Bowls, and he’s won one of those. We have nothing but great things to say about the guy. We just respectfully rank four guys higher.
Yeah, we all saw what happened with Sean McVay’s L.A. Rams last season, but let’s not allow recency bias to plague opinions here. We know McVay can throw haymakers with the best of them.
His issue is an easy one to diagnose. He just doesn’t have a ton of talent except for some of the heavy hitters he has on this team like Aaron Donald, Matthew Stafford, and Cooper Kupp to name a few. Rest easy though Rams fans. McVay’s job isn’t on the line, nor should it be.
Admittedly, our theories about Kyle Shanahan were set in stone when we watched what he did with Kirk Cousins in Washington and Matt Ryan in Atlanta. The latter got an MVP trophy out of the arrangement.
In San Fran, as much as we’ve grown to despise his team as of late, we have to give credit where it is due. He continues to get the best out of his players and put them in the best position to be successful. That’s all that you can ask for from a head coach.
