Nine months after taking a ton of criticism for how the 2025 season ended, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni finally has a chance to change the narrative on him being on the hot seat with an opening weekend statement against the Washington Commanders.
Sirianni led the Eagles to an 11-6 record and an NFC East title last year. Still, it ended with a one-possession loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round.
That put Sirianni in the hot seat for months and could cost him his job in 2026 if things don't go well. After all the changes made, a Week 1 win over the Washington Commanders could turn down the heat on that talk. Even just for a little bit.
Why Nick Sirianni is facing the hear in Year 6 with Eagles
Last year, Sirianni took a chance on a first-year offensive coordinator for the second time in three seasons with Kevin Patullo. That had disastrous results, with the team finishing in the bottom 15 in every major offensive category, including total offense, rushing, passing, and scoring.
Patullo's exit led to Sean Mannion being hired...another first-time play caller. Not exactly what the Eagles fans wanted to see, but this is different. Mannion's young, bright mind had everyone buzzing about his potential, but it still means Sirianni is taking another risk on an unproven coach.
It also doesn't help that Sirianni can sometimes takes risk during games, which has led to some tough losses. Even in the second Dallas Cowboys matchup last year, Sirianni went for a long field goal in the fourth quarter instead of going for it on fourth down, knowing kicker Jake Elliott had been struggling all year from 50+ yards. That miss led to a Cowboys score, and the Eagles blew a massive lead and lost the game.
There have been questions as well about whether Sirianni actually does anything on the team. This is a completely unfair assessment since he is a head coach, but no one respects what he does as a head coach. And his personality does rub people the wrong way, so that has an effect on how people feel.
Sirianni has a 59-26 overall record in the regular season in his five years with the Eagles, setting the standard that winning is all he does. He's never had a losing record or has never missed the playoffs, so if his team fails at any time, owner Jeffrey Lurie might pull the plug on Sirianni.
How Nick Sirianni can take the heat off of him in Eagles' Week 1 game
In the past, the Eagles have started the season slowly. The offense usually takes a few weeks to get into rhythm and struggles.
Sirianni has a divisional opponent early in the year, which could be a good momentum boost as they look to beat the Commanders. Washington improved the roster and is healthier than they were last year, with quarterback Jayden Daniels back in the lineup.
Eveeryone knows the defense will do their jobs because they are an elite unit. It's all on how the offense will look.
Mannion has to coach a good game from the booth, and Sirianni needs to make sure that happens. Since Sirianni is an offensive-minded coach, that should mean the offense looks good. Jalen Hurts needs to get into rhythm with his new-look wide receiver room, Saquon Barkley has to get back on track, and the offensive line has to improve.

A statement win against the Commanders would go a long way in Sirianni keeping the heat off of him. Losing Week 1 would only intensify the noise more.
