With training camp officially set to kick off, a number of fascinating position battles are on tap for the Philadelphia Eagles. And while much has been made of the safety spot and the fight among linemen for backup offensive line duties, another hyper-competitive training camp battle is set to commence: the showdown for No. 2 wideout duties.
Martin Frank of Delaware Online recently penned a piece circling the action at that second wideout spot, sans A.J. Brown, as the top-ranked training camp battle.
"This is the most important battle of training camp because the winner will become WR2 next to DeVonta Smith, who is the Eagles' WR1. Smith is expected to replace A.J. Brown's production after Brown was traded to New England in June following four straight seasons of 1,000 or more receiving yards.
Smith has three such seasons under his belt. So either Lemon or Wicks will then have to replace, or come close to, Smith's production. Lemon was the Eagles' first-round pick, and he projects more as a slot receiver. He had 1,156 yards receiving last season at Southern Cal.
But the Eagles traded for Wicks last spring. He has experience in the system that new Eagles OC Sean Mannion is installing from their time together in Green Bay. Plus, the Eagles signed Wicks to a one-year extension for 2027 worth $12 million.
While the loser of this battle will be WR3, keep in mind that those opportunities could be few and far between. Jahan Dotson was the Eagles' No. 3 receiver in each of the past two seasons, and he had just 37 receptions total during that time.
In other words, if Lemon can establish himself as a reliable receiver as a rookie, he should get the bulk of the playing time with Smith. If not, Wicks could get that No. 2 spot, and Lemon's chances could come sporadically, especially considering the Eagles also signed veteran free agents Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore.
That would not be a good sign for the Eagles' passing game in general."

Looking closer at the head-to-head comp for Lemon versus Wicks, the veteran newcomer from Green Bay appears to hold two distinct advantages.
First, Wicks is coming in with extensive, first-hand experience operating within offensive coordinator Sean Mannion's offensive vision. Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur and Mannion dialed up plenty of plays for Wicks, who now arrives with not only NFL experience but intimate knowledge and game-time also reps with Mannion as a coach.
In addition, Wicks has wasted no time building chemistry with his new quarterback. Hurts and Wicks have established a strong bond in the early stages, and again, with Wicks now entering his fourth NFL campaign, he has experience to his benefit.
All that being said, this offense will, in fact, highlight the strengths of more than just two, or even three, wideouts. Mannion figures to look to spread the ball around far more than what fans saw in last year's offense.
As an electrifying rookie, Lemon should absolutely get plenty of looks, regardless of whether or not he's listed on the depth chart as the second or third wideout. If all goes to plan, the slot will be the spot where Lemon feasts.
And Hollywood Brown will also have every opportunity to make an impact in a Green Bay-style offense that does not over-target a mere two receivers. There will be reps, targets, and plays to be made for this diverse cast, regardless of what an early depth chart suggests.
