Bold predictions for Jalen Hurts in Eagles' Week 7 game against Giants
This Sunday, at 1 p.m. EST, the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants meet on the field to do something they have often done. They're playing a football game for the 184th time to play a football game. This rivalry dates back to October 15, 1933 when they first met and Philly was beaten badly (56-0).
The Birds have steadied the ship though. A tad over 91 years since that nightmarish day, the all-time series has shifted in Philadelphia's favor. They own 93 wins to New York's 88. These two have also tied twice.
This game figures to be an ugly, gut-wrenching affair. This wouldn't be the 2024-25 Eagles if it didn't. Throw in another caveat. Jalen Hurts always seems to struggle at MetLife Stadium.
He spoke with the media on Wednesday and didn't seem to be phased or of the impression that's anything more than a coincidence. We believe the Eagles will win this one. Here's how we see Jalen Hurts' day playing out in the process.
Jalen Hurts finally leads a first-quarter scoring drive.
This one has been talked about constantly. Five games are in the books this season. Philly hasn't scored a single point during the first quarter in any of them.
That changes this week. QB1 orchestrates a first-quarter scoring drive in this one thanks to a slant pass to A.J. Brown somewhere during the process and because Jalen need only exist in the time it takes to hand the ball to Saquon Barkley.
QB1 fumbles in first half, but the offense recovers.
Jalen Hurts has fumbled five times this season. That ties for the most in all of the NFL. He is also tied with Will Levis, Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson for the most fumbles lost. All have three.
Philly was able to outlast the Cleveland Browns in Week 6 thanks in part to taking better care of the football. We fear that trend will end this week, but QB1 one will be bailed out by a teammate's fumble recovery during the first half (one that halts a drive).
Hurts will have to eat an interception though. More on that in a second.
An ugly second-half Jalen Hurts turnover will result in points for the Giants, but Philly responds, scoring on the ensuing drive.
Philly was perfect in 12 meetings versus the New York Jets before Gang Green finally hung a loss on Philly last season. Strangely, that game was also on October 15th, the 90th anniversary of that 1933 loss to Big Blue.
We'll all remember where we were when Tony Adams picked off that fourth-quarter pass. That was Jalen's third of the day, and we all watched Philly seemingly give up despite getting one more chance.
There wasn't much the Birds could do as there was only 30 seconds remaining. This time around, that final INT comes early enough that Jalen and company can mount a drive to answer after Big Blue gets, at worse, a field goal.
Maybe we can find some peace with said answer drive.
Jalen Hurts' final stat line: 19 cmp, 30 att, 33 yards rushing on 11 carries, one passing TD, one interception
MetLife Stadium isn't just a house of horrors for Mekhi Becton. It's been a nightmare destination for QB Jalen Hurts.
Philly has only won there once in four tries with him as their starter. He's lost twice to the G-Men and once to the New York Jets.
He has completed 63 of 107 passes resulting in 681 yards through the air. He's thrown three TD passes versus seven interceptions. It's getting cold outside. The weather is changing. This doesn't bode well.
Here's something of note, His first two games versus the Giants in Jersey both resulted in 77 yards rushing. Maybe he has an advantage there. We'll see, but so far this season, he averages just 3.5 yards per carry and 39.2 rushing yards per game.
Thankfully, Philly is bringing along Saquon Barkley for assistance.
