The Indianapolis Colts are the first team in the NFL this season to make a major change at the head-coaching or general-manager level, having relieved GM Chris Ballard of his duties. That's a move the Philadelphia Eagles should be interested in.
Ballard and the Colts have struggled, going five straight seasons without a playoff appearance. Indianapolis is coming off a loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans and is now sitting at 2-4.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen has been in the hot seat, without a playoff appearance since taking over in 2023. Most Eagles remember Steichen as the offensive coordinator during Nick Sirianni's first two seasons as head coach, and he helped the team reach the Super Bowl in 2022. We are all the same thing: please fire Steichen and bring him home.
Eagles should watch what the Colts do with Shane Steichen in 2026
As a head coach, Steichen has been as average as it gets in the NFL. He currently has a 27-30 overall record in his four-year career.
Of course, Eagles fans remember him as Sirianni's first offensive coordinator and as someone who played a major role in the team's success in those first two seasons. Sirianni was originally the Eagles' play caller. Still, a bad start to 2021 led to Steichen taking over and transforming the offense into a juggernaut for the rest of the season and into 2022.
Philly finished 14th in yards and 12th in points at the end of the 2021 season. They went from a 2-5 team to a playoff team after Steichen became the primary play caller.
In 2022, the Eagles' offense reached new heights, finishing third in yards and points. It's the only season in the Sirianni era when the passing offense was in the top 10 in yards.
While Steichen's tenure as head coach has been up and down, the offense was consistently in the top 15 in yards and points before the 2026 season. That means that unit carried a struggling defense.
Philly's offense in 2026 has been disastrous, to put it mildly, under first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. They are ranked 30th in total yards, 29th in rushing, 28th in points, and 26th in passing. Things have been much worse under Mannion than under Kevin Patullo last year (who knew that was possible).
It feels like a no-brainer: if the Colts move on from Steichen, which seems to be the team's direction right now, the Eagles have to call him up. Of course, a lot of that depends on what they do with Sirianni, whether they give him another season as head coach after the injury-filled 2026 season, and whether the team can make the playoffs.
If Sirianni is the head coach in 2027 and things keep going this way, Mannion will have to get the boot, and Steichen needs to be hired as offensive coordinator. Jalen Hurts played better under Steichen, and the Colts' head coach knew how to balance this offense.

No matter what, the Eagles will have to change something up with the team, and Steichen is a proven play-caller who can succeed as an offensive coordinator. Eagles fans would love to see him back on the sidelines again and fix what Sirianni and Mannion have broken.
