The Dallas Cowboys are making their five millionth trade in the past year to improve their roster, but it won't help them reach the same level as the Philadelphia Eagles.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Cowboys are one of two teams trying to trade for Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Dallas has three defensive backs ruled out of its Week 3 game against the Baltimore Ravens.
This is just the Cowboys' latest attempt to become competitive and support their new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker (former Eagles defensive backs coach). All that won't mean much because they are still not nearly as talented as Philly.
Eagles still rule supreme over Cowboys even if they trade for Joey Porter Jr.
Porter is a strong defensive back and would help Dallas' defense. He hasn't played a game this season because he's been hurt, but he's close to returning.
During his three NFL seasons with the Steelers, he has 31 pass deflections and three interceptions. He has not allowed a passer rating over 82.7 in a season and has allowed under 50% completion percentage in two of his three years in the league.
The problem is that the Cowboys have way more problems that just the secondary. They can sack the quarterback (two in the first two games), they can't run the ball (third-worst rushing attack in the NFL, with 67.5 yards per game through two games), and they're horrible on third down (68% conversion allowed).
Philly, on the other hand, is in a much better position with the team right now. Jalen Hurts has improved his play, throwing five touchdown passes in two games; the wide receiver room is deeper, with DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks leading it, and the defense remains elite, ranking 10th in total defense with 293 yards allowed per game.
In recent years, the Eagles have been better than the Cowboys. Philly has been in the playoffs five straight seasons, while Dallas hasn't been in the postseason since 2023.
The Eagles are just the more trusted franchise over the Cowboys since they have proven themselves to be a great team. Philly has flaws on the offensive line and at safety, but Dallas has far more issues than the Eagles.
There's no doubt, though, that the Cowboys pose the biggest threat to the Eagles in the NFC East. The Washington Commanders and New York Giants don't have their starting quarterbacks right now, so it comes down to the Eagles or the Cowboys to win the division.

Philly has a chance to run away with the division with a Week 3 win over the Chicago Bears. That would make their NFC East lead feel more comfortable if they can start 3-0 and really keep the Cowboys on their toes.
