Even though the Philadelphia Eagles have gotten off to a brutal 2-3 start to the 2026 season, one thing fans can take solace in is that the Dallas Cowboys have left just as much meat on the bone. Their hiring of former Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker as defensive coordinator is already going belly-up.

After just five games and a 2-3 start, Dallas is hiring Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant to help Parker. After undrafted free agent rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels diced up Parker's defense in a Thursday Night win, Parker is also going to be leaving the sidelines and calling Week 6 from the booth.

This move is meant to proved an experienced counterpart to the young, developing Parker, if one is to believe the Cowboys' spin on the matter. This seems like the Cowboys are already trying to work around Parker after five games, putting his 2027 status in jeopardy. The Eagles may be disappointing, but at least Dallas is right there with them.

Cowboys' Mike Pettine hire suggests frustration with former Eagles coach Christian Parker

Pettine has head coach experience after going 10-22 in two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Pettine, who has served as a defensive coordinator for Rex Ryan's New York Jets and Matt LaFleur's Green Bay Packers, spent the last four years as assistant head coach with the Minnesota Vikings. This hire has some gravitas.

Parker was regarded as perhaps the most sought-after first-time defensive coordinator candidate this hiring cycle. This makes his struggles even more confusing to both Cowboys fans, who thought they had hired the next Brian Flores, and Eagles fans, who saw him coach up an elite unit.

Parker isn't being given anything to work with, as the pass rush consists of a a bunch of young players and the cornerback room may be the worst in football. However, Dallas is without question one of the worst defenses in the league, and after firing Matt Eberflus to find a quick fix in Parker, Cowboys fans are naturally quite disappointed.

The Philadelphia Eagles may need to reunite with Christian Parker

In perhaps an expected turn of events, the Eagles' secondary is struggling without Parker. Second-round safety Andrew Mukuba has not taken the steps forward that many have expected, and Cooper DeJean has taken a step back from where he was last year. Both Philadelphia and Dallas are struggling in the aftermath of the Parker promotion.

Even when grading on a curve for the lack of defensive back talent, Parker getting torched by backup quarterbacks and rookies is unacceptable. Should Vic Fangio be retained for 2027, which may not be a given after Nick Sirianni's seat has started to warm up ever so slightly, Parker may have a spot waiting for him on the Philly coaching staff.

In many ways, Parker could become an even more beloved figure in Philly if the Pettine hire was meant to siphon responsibility away from him. He would be a beloved assistant from a championship team, a double agent who ruined the Cowboys' defense in a year when the NFC East is wide open, and a fan favorite who returns to some applause.
